Thomas R. Marshall, Architect

Thomas R. Marshall

Position: Architect

Education: Bachelor of Arts, Syracuse University, 1970
Bachelor of Architecture, Syracuse University, 1970
Master of Architecture, Syracuse University, 1972

Registration: Washington State, 1991

Background: Tom grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, on the shores of Lake Erie where he developed a love for sailing and buildings, with a special appreciation of fine housing. After a debate over careers in engineering or architecture, he pursued his more artistic bent, studying architecture and, more specifically, residential design. In residential architecture, Tom could apply his communication skills and be more intimately involved in construction.

Along with his love of design, Tom has always been interested in how things go together -- be it rebuilding a garage with his father as a boy, or building his own residence.

Tom is married with two stepchildren, living on a houseboat in Seattle, sailing, designing and building.

Experience: Following Tom's college education, he spent five years as Assistant Professor at Kansas State University teaching courses in Environmental Design and Graphic Communications at the College of Architecture and Design.

Following a brief stint in Eugene, Oregon, Tom moved to Seattle to work at Environmental Works, a Community Design Center. Working directly with the community, he was involved in a full range of projects from housing to playground construction. He then established his own design/build company where the primary focus was on residential design and construction of both new houses and remodel/restorations.

Tom's work designing and building brought him back around to the practice of architecture as the best way to focus his skills. In 1986, he joined Sortun·Vos Architects. Interested in staying involved in hands-on building, he maintains a cabinet shop where he builds cabinets and furniture in his spare time.

Since joining Sortun·Vos Architects, Tom has worked within the firm's team concept and has been involved in all phases of architectural practice.
