Thomas R. Nychay, Principal

Tom Nychay

Position: Architect and Principal

Education: Bachelor of Science, Washington State University, 1984
Bachelor of Architecture, Washington State University, 1985

Registration: Washington State, 1993

Background: Tom grew up in the Puget Sound area after living in different parts of the United States and Canada. Following his interest in drawing, graphic arts and building, he pursued an architecture degree at WSU. Tom's thesis project: "A Model Residence for the Mentally Disabled" investigated issues of integrating those with mental handicaps in existing residential environments.

Tom is married with four children, and lives in the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle. He enjoys being outdoors— bicycling, camping, kayaking, and especially skiing.

Experience: Tom joined Sortun·Vos Architects in 2000 and became a principal the following year. He is licensed in Washington State and brings a wide range of experience and design enthusiasm to the firm. His responsibilities include all phases and aspects of architectural design work. Skilled in both computer and hand drawing, Tom participates in new single and multi-family projects, residential remodels, and commercial projects.

While having experience in a variety of project and construction types, residential architecture has always been Tom's passion. He enjoys exploring elements of the Craftsman and Arts & Crafts movements to formulate design solutions. Tom has had articles and projects published in Fine Homebuilding, and the Seattle Time's Pacific Magazine.

Activities: Tom is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and Historic Seattle.

Tom has served on civic boards such as the Latona School PTSA, Latona School Associates, and volunteered with local groups such as the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, and WEaving Wallingford. Tom is currently the webmaster for the Seattle Girls' Choir.
